Son Doong Cave is more than 5 kilometres long (3.1 miles), 200 metres high (660 ft) and 150 metres wide (490 ft). According to Haward Limbirts – the member of the British Cave Research Association team, with these numbers, the cave is five times as large as nearby caves like Phong Nha Cave and Hang En. Accordingly, Son Doong cave overtook Deer Cave in Malaysia to take the title of the world’s largest cave. The sparkling entrance of the world’s largest cave
The cave contains some of the tallest known stalagmites in the world, which are up to 70 m tall. Behind the Great Wall of Vietnam, there are pearls found inside the cave with the large size of baseballs.
It is estimated that Son Doong cave was created 2-5 million years ago by the river water eroding away the limestone underneath the mountain, where the limestone was unstable. The ceiling collapsed and created huge skylights. The natural beauty of the cave
This cave is near the Vietnam-Laos border. It is very deep and has a big lake inside. Jungles emerge from inside the cave, misty clouds enveloping the whole scene, and fossil passages were considered the proofs of the cave’s ancient existence.
It attracts a lot of adventurers
To reach Hang Son Doong, tourists have to first go on foot across the Ban Doong ethnic minority village, the only village located inside the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park with the population of less than 40 people.

How is Christmas in Vietnam celebrated?
Despite a Buddhist country, Christmas in Vietnam is considered one of the four main religious festivals, including the Lunar New Year, the mid-autumn festival, and Buddha’s birthday.
At the beginning of December, every major church such as the Notre Dame Cathedral in Ho Chi Minh City or Saint Joseph Cathedral (the Big Church) in Hanoi is beautifully decorated with the nativity crib scene or “creche”. The nearly life-sized statues of Mary, Joseph, Jesus, the shepherds, and typical animals are things not to be missed for this special occasion.
The streets are also sparkling with colorful lights. Shops and stores have Christmas trees colorfully decorated, along with the advertising sales for Christmas season. Business centers are brilliant and sparkling with Christmas items and beautiful decorations. You can easily feel the cozy Christmas atmosphere on crowded streets. Christmas is around the corner.
Christmas Eve is regarded as more important than Christmas Day in Vietnam, when people whether being a Christian or not enjoy a special meal with the family, pray for blessings. In main cities, the streets are more crowded with people, particularly couples, youngsters. It’s great and memorable to admire the cozy vibe and take sparkling photos of Christmas Eve.
Especially, on Christmas Eve, the Christians in Vietnam usually attend a Midnight Mass as in the western countries, and then return home to a spectacular Christmas dinner with chicken soup, instead of the turkey and Christmas pudding.
In Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, people tend to gather at the city centers where are the most beautiful and cars are not allowed for the night. Children in Vietnam are greatly excited because they believe that Santa Clause will put gifts or candies in their shoes or socks in front of the doors on Christmas Eve, expecting to have his special presents on the morning of 25th December.
On Christmas, people often give each other nice wishes, popularly “Merry Christmas!” or ” Chuc mung Giang Sinh!”, ” Giang sinh vui ve!”, “Giang sinh an lanh!”, etc. If you are in Vietnam this special time, learn some Christmas wishes. You certainly feel happy and amazing to say those in Vietnamese

The natural beauty of Sapa is combined with human creativity, the topography of the mountains, green forests, which creates romantic spot.
Being one of the most attractive tourism destinations of the country, Sapa is a precious gift that Mother Nature dedicates to Vietnam.
Location and history
350km far north-west from Hanoi, Sapa, the capital of Sapa District in Lao Cai Province, lies at the altitude of 1600m. With the temperature ranging from the lowest of -1oC to the highest of 29oC, Sapa’s climate is moderate and drizzly in summer while chill and foggy in winter.
Sapa (or Chapa- the “sandy place”) first appeared in Vietnam national map in the late 1880s when the French disembarked in highland Tonkin. The first permanent French civilian resident arrived in Sapa in 1909, and by 1920, there were a number of villas being built in this area by prosperous professionals. Going through many ups and downs, nowadays, Sapa is the prominent holiday destination, favored by both locals and foreign tourists.
Sapa – fairy home of ethnic minorities
There is nowhere in Vietnam can tourists easily meet the local ethnic minorities like in Sapa. The district is the home of a great diversity of ethnic people, including five main groups of Hmong, Yao, Tay, Zay and Xa Pho. They do not live in center area but in hamlets scattering on the valleys throughout Sapa District.
Actually, not until the 20th century did a majority of the ethnic people changed to sedentary lifestyle with intensive farming method on sloping terraces, instead of slash-and-burn culture like in the past. Town of Sapa is where ethnic minority people gather, trade or sell their farming products such as rice, corn, fruits, as well as handicrafts and souvenirs to tourists. There is one interesting fact about ethnic minority people in Sapa that besides their dialects, many of them, especially small children, can speak English pretty well with clear pronunciation.
Spending time visiting ethnic minorities’ villages, observing their daily’s activities or even living homestay, in order to understand more about their culture is now the top priority of visitors, especially international ones. A trip to Sapa would definitely more meaningful with participatory activities, such as learning to make handicrafts or helping the local with farm work! In case time does not allow, you can always hire a local guide for your trekking routes. Chances are these boys and girls will tell you lovely stories about their traditions, their lives or even ask you to join their family activities.
Sapa – challenging for mountainous trekking
Sapa is voted to be the best trekking spot in Vietnam, by both natives and foreigners. The whole district is dominated by The Hoang Lien Son mountain range, which also includes Mt. Fan Si Pan- the highest peak in Vietnam and the entire Indochina peninsula with the height of 3143m. This mount is not only a tough challenge to trekking enthusiasts but also an opportunity to witness the splendid mountainous vista.
The scenery of the Sapa region represents a harmonious relationship between the minority people and nature, which can be seen perceptibly in the paddy fields carpeting the rolling lower slopes of the Hoang Lien Mountains. It was the elements wearing away the underlying rock over thousands of years that created this impressive physical landscape.
The geographical location of the area makes it a truly unique place for a rich variety of plants, birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and insects, some of them can only be found in northwestern Vietnam.
Sapa- thunderstruck local food
Sapa’s specialties are another reason attracting more and more tourists travelling to this town. A wide range of sub-tropical vegetables such as white cauliflower, red beet, or chayote are planted here. There are dishes that will be a must to enjoy for every visitor – boiled chayote consumed with sesame or “lon cap nach”- pig carried under armpit, which are home pigs but are raised in the field or forest.
The cool weather of the region makes barbecued meat and fish with mushroom and vegetables the most preferred street foods in Sapa. People grill corn, sweet potatoes, dumpling, bamboo-tube rice, or even eggs as well. Nevertheless, tourists can try many other local foods like purple sticky rice or “thang co”- horse meat right in Sapa market.
More surprisingly, Western restaurants, from Italian to French ones, can also be found around the center of Sapa, at a very reasonable price.
How to get there?
Visitors can choose to go to Sapa by train or car, but train is more advisable because of the long and bumpy road.
Most tourists arrive in Lao Cai, the province to which Sapa belongs, by train (read more about train from Hanoi to Sapa) and it is definitely an impressive ride. The train leaves Hanoi train station in the evening and arrives in Lao Cai train station in early morning. From Lao Cai train station to Sapa is another hour bus ride, which gives your eyes a massage with the endless blue sky and colourful terraced paddy field. The road is curved around the mountain and you will just go from one surprise to another. The further you go, the closer you are to the sky and to nature.
Sapa is definitely a place to remember. And maybe to return as well!
